If you have honesty, integrity, morals and ethics in todays society, many look upon you as a dinosaur.
I'm not saying it's true, but more that's how it's seen. Sad isn't it?
For mine, I'd rather be damned for doing the right thing as opposed to the wrong thing.

You certainly don't shy away from topics that can take days to discuss ;-).

I agree with above statements, nicely done Sir Smith.

I have far too many comments, experiences and questions to be summarised into a comment.

The following I will say though:
To back up Evyl's comment there are moments where I am still not sure whether 'the good old values' are nothing more than a form of an antiquitated social nanny government instigated by the Churches and other institutions of power with the goal of keeping the general population under control (less privileged) because I am sure we all agree that this 'life is all about me and to my benefit' is not a new occurance.

But those moments are mostly when I start comparing my life with that of others and it seems that I am at times stupid not take advantage. In the end, yes life may be short, and as long as people really believe that are getting more fulfillment by cheating on others, whether that may be romantically, financially, professionally, oekologically, medically you name it, than nothing is going to change those people continuing their way and I am not sure that from one human to another we have the right to decide which forms of fullfillment are acceptable and which ones not (that's what the law and government is for which opens up a whole new can of worms as we all know).

I for myself, have never felt 'good' doing any of that, and have learnt that short term satisfaction doesn't result in long term happiness. I would assume it's the same for anybody else, but really, I am one person and what do I know? :-)

I could have wrote this, but I don't think I could have wrote it better. ;) I agree with you most of the time on most of the stuff you have to say, but this time I am with you 100%. I'm not perfect, this I know. I recognize my faults, and I try to better myself. For me, the people around me, the people of today as well as the people of tomorrow. I'm not the perfect example (far from it), but I like to think of myself as a good example. :) We gotta start somewhere.

I couldn't agree with you more. I don't smoke anymore but I don't want the gov't telling me I can't. And If I want to eat a pound of trans fats I am going to. And if I don't want to wear a seat belt I won't. I do wear one but I don't like being told by the gov't that I have to.

I would agree wholeheartedly. No wait let me clarify. In my humble opinion government's purpose is to ensure that it's citizens have equal opportunity for success within the capitalist system and fill in the gaps in the few areas where a capitalist system would not be effective (regulation as an example to make sure the banks do not repeat the same mistakes as they recently did). This premise in my opinion would also include government ensuring that those who may be disadvantaged (without money) receive the same rights as those who are advantaged (with money). I am sure that you would not care quite as much Smith if you had a couple of billion dollars because you would just pay for your health care for yourself if it was not provided to you. So with your example I would agree that no one should be denied health care when they are most vulnerable regardless of what they ate or are eating/smoking (ie a person with heart disease or cancer)or whether they can actually afford it. As well I would suggest that people should not be discriminated against in any way regarding their immigration status, age, gender, sexual orientation or the colour of their skin as is often the case (yes in Canada too). Problem is I think I am beginning to sound a little Democratic rather than Republican at this point. Oh wait I am just one of those "Canadian Socialists". The question is really what we as a society are willing to support with our tax dollars. For example what are the rights of the elderly in a capitalist society. They are often seen as a drain on the system because they do not usually make money any longer. I would argue that their worth is far greater than society gives credit. I say this because all we need to do is look at the level of funding we provide for our sick and elderly to evaluate the way society looks at these people. Oh and same sex marriage.....Ok likely getting too controversial now but you know what I mean. This is why Spaz keeps me from speaking about politics.
